UpdatesFall 2010

8/10: The Summer Season has concluded with great success for UNL Rugby.

First, in June, UNL sent 8 players to the Western Rugby Union Mustangs Collegiate All Star team.

Also this summer, UNL played in three competitive Sevens Tournaments.  First, in the Cornhusker State Games, UNL went 3-1, losing the final to the Omaha Goats and taking 2nd.  Next, UNL moved up from the Collegiate Division to play in the Premier Division in the Kansas City Sevens Tournament, managing only one victory against St. Louis and losing honorably to some of the nations top teams.  Finally, UNL ended their Sevens season in the Denver Sevens Tournament going 4-1 and losing the final to Colorado.  After scoring first, the Huskers could not hang on as CU pulled away in the second half.

After an eventful and productive Summer, the Huskers look forward to returning to 15's.  Having lost only 3 players from last season, UNL is looking forward to a strong, dominant season.

SPRING 2010

5/8:  A second UNL player is representing Nebraska today at the USA Eagles 7's Camp.  Erwin Schmidt is in San Diego this weekend in his red, white, and blue.  Good luck!
__________

4/24: Seven Huskers placed the ball over the tryline this weekend against Creighton as Nebraska went on to win 39-3 in the last match of the Spring season.
__________

4/17: UNL avenges last week's loss against Iowa State.  After giving up an early try, UNL battled back to score 25 straight points before allowing ISU over the tryline again.  Final score: 25-14 Nebraska.
__________

4/10: UNL had a very weak showing at the UNL Tournament. Bringing only 14 players, had to borrow from Lincoln City and Northern Iowa to field a full team and a sub. Coach Niko got in on the action as well, playing in all three matches. The results reflected dedication of the missing UNL players as the Huskers went 0-3, falling to UNI (15-7), Wisconsin-Stout (15-10), and ISU (32-17).  It's going to be a hard week of practice to prepare for a revenge match against Iowa State in Ames next Saturday.

__________

3/28: Tough loss against Metropolis on Day 2 of the March Madness Tournament in Wayne. Injuries in key positions made it tough for UNL to play their game. Down 10-5 on the last set piece, rookie Brandon Williams scored his zulu try to tie the game at 10. Markham missed the conversion from the sideline into a strong wind. Unfortunately, the inexpereience hurt UNL in overtime as a costly penalty led to a successful kick by Metropolis who went on to win 13-10.
__________

3/27: Successful first day at Wayne. Game 1 against the Iowa Hawkeyes was a rough one for the team. Down 8-0 with 6 minutes left, the swift-footed Eric Hagen broke the line and made his way down the field to bring the Huskers within 1. With under a minute left, Ben Bachmann made a thundering run and had his way with the Hawkeyes, stretching out over the line for the game winning try.
Game 2 against Northern State, the defending D3 National Champions, was a rough one for the UNL starting side who lost 6 players to injuries in the first half. The rookies stepped up big time to take the Huskers to a 25-19 win.
Nebraska is hoping to come out strong tomorrow with a high seed in the playoff bracket. Listen to the games broadcasted at wildcat.wsc.edu or on 91.9 The Cat (Wayne).
__________

3/26: The March Madness Rugby Tournament in Wayne, NE will be broadcasted on the radio and can be heard online.
Select games will be broadcasted from 8:30am-7:30pm on Saturday, and 8:30am-2:00pm on Sunday. Also, catch the Saturday wrap-up show from 8:30pm-9:00pm Saturday night.

__________

3/18: UNL improves its record for the spring season to 2-2 after a victory today over Rice University. After Marty Downes left the Owls in shock and awe with his fleeting speed and brute strength scoring two early tries, Nebraska continued to roll with tries from Eric Hagen, Pat Keady, and Ethan Bender. UNL Rugby is too much for the state of Texas to handle.
__________

__________

3/14: The Husker men started out their Spring Break on the right track with a solid victory over the University of Dallas.  After giving up an early lead, UNL battled back with tries from Ben Bachmann, Chris Casper, Marty Downes, Eric Hagen, Jeff Hunter, and Andy Markham as they went on to defeat UD 34-15.  Markham was 2 from 6 on conversions.
____________

3/6: Another tough loss, the young team is still having trouble playing fundamentally sound and tough rugby for the full 80 minutes. Despite spurts of solid rugby the Husker men fell short against Mizzou 32-45.

____________

2/28: Disappointing start to the season at OSU. Struggled with injuries at key positions before the game even started and a light traveling squad. Look to bounce back this weekend at home against Missouri
____________

FALL 2009

The season has been highlighted by growing pains, a team peppered with youth and a few veteran players shows great promise. Finishing games has been a challenge but a lack of experience lends to that.

Early victories over Lincoln City and Iowa St. set the stage for a promising season and a strong side, but key departures and bountiful youth would show later on.
